Loegering offers tracked Genie lift

12 March 2008

US undercarriage specialist Loegering is selling a modified, tracked version of Genie's S-60 and S-65 booms (pictured). Loegering's President Kurt Bollman told ALH that no modifications to the basic model are required, and that the big benefit is “high-flotation and stability. It reduces the [ground pressures] from 40-48 psi to less than 10 psi.”

The tracked versions of the booms are available only through Loegering, and Genie has also approved the tracked system on its Z-60/34 articulated boom.

Bollman said around a dozen of the modified booms have been sold since the company started offering it early in 2007, most in North America, but also two to a UK company using them for exploration work in the Antarctic. One US rental customer is Art's Rental, based in Newport, KY.

Mike Davis, Genie Industries' senior director of engineering, told ALH that another benefit of the unit is the improved stability compared to more conventional crawler models; “Having it on a four point system makes it a lot more stable and comfortable for the operator.”

The Loegering version allows a user to swap between the tracks and tires. However, the width of the unit with the tracks sometimes requires a travel permit in the US, so Genie is looking into developing a shortened axle version of the S-60 to make it narrower. That would be a dedicated model without the capability to swap between tracks and tires.
