JLG launches lift telematics

07 May 2008

The first connected asset system customized for aerial work platforms has been developed by JLG Industries and US telematics specialist MasterTrak. The system will first be available on all of JLG's combustion engine booms, with the exception of its biggest 150 foot 150HAX articulated model.

The system, which gets its official launch and brand name at ConExpo, communicates remotely with the platform's control system, providing owners with detailed information on the operation of each machine, including fault diagnostics.

The features include the ability to track equipment through GPS monitoring at regional, state and national levels; powering equipment on/off; geo fencing; and on-demand diagnostics and troubleshooting. Users access the data through a secure website.

Machines can be fitted with the telematics control unit (TCU) and associated hardware at the factory, and current models retrofitted by authorized installers.

JLG said the technology, which could be extended to additional product families if there is demand, will allow rental companies to lower ownership cost and increase uptime. Owners can recognize a problem before the point of failure, with the system sending an alert before an end user calls. Owners can “ping” the machine to analyze the operating system, determine the problem and send a technician with the correct parts to repair the problem. Owners and operators can also ask JLG to contact the machine directly, if necessary.

JLG said the system will also identify when equipment that is off-rent has been used and help preserve pre-lien rights.
