MEWP manufacturer Genie has revealed a virtual reality system that aims to help in the training of aerial platform technicians and service providers.

Visitors to the recent APEX 2023 exhibition in The Netherlands, including AI editor Euan Youdale, were able to try out the new technology, which is intended to deliver the practical part of the “Core Skill Training - Electrical” training programme.

The VR tool that will be demoed at APEX is an innovative new tool intended to deliver the practical part of the “Core Skill Training – Electrical,” which is a training program that is already in place.

Currently in the testing phase, the VR tool comprises a VR headset and hand controllers and allows users to build a “simplified version of an electrical circuit” within an artificial environment, by interacting with a number of virtual electrical components, such as switches, bulbs and fuses.

The company plans to roll out the VR tool internally later this year and is hoping to make it available to its equipment dealers and customers, although a date for this has not yet been set.

Alongside its VR training simulator, Genie also used APEX to exhibit a number of its latest access machines, displaying both hybrid and electric models.

According to the manufacturer, its latest machines aim to meet the rising “demand for more environmentally friendly equipment for work at height”, while also providing a low total cost of ownership.

Products on show included the GS-1932 E-Drive Lithium-Ion and GS-3246 scissor lifts, the electric S-60 DC telescopic boom lift and the hybrid Z-45 FE articulating boom lift.

The GS-1932 E-Drive scissor lift, which features a specially designed zero-maintenance battery that, in addition to providing a full working day’s use from a four-hour charge, has a 10-year lifespan and comes with a five-year warranty.

While the GS-1932 delivers a maximum working height of 7.8m and offers a basket capacity of 227kg, Genie’s GS-3246 slab scissor lift has an 11.7m working height and a basket capacity of 318kg, and is fitted with the same E-Drive battery system.

Genie also highlighted its award-winning electric S-60 DC boom lift. Said to be the industry’s first lightweight, four-wheel drive electrified telescopic boom lift in the 18m height class, the model offers a maximum outreach of 12.3m, a working height of 20.6m and a platform capacity 300kg on a 1.83m jib.

Speaking ahead of the APEX exhibition, Will Westley, Genie VP of Sales & Support for the EMEAI Region, said, “Across Europe, and globally, demand is strong for equipment that can deliver a lower environmental footprint without sacrificing performance or quality.

“At the same time that demand has increased, the technology that enables electrification have evolved and costs to implement it have come down.”
