Fall Protection In Aerial Lifts:

25 March 2008

• OSHA requires aerial lift operators to use a personal fall arrest system and tie off to the anchor points on the lift - not the building or structure that is being worked on.

• If using a fall arrest system, make sure the lift can support a 5,000 pound load – otherwise, use a fall restraint system that keeps the worker from falling at all.

• While aerial boom lift users are required to use fall protection, scissor lift users do not need to use fall protection if the scissor lift meets the guardrail requirements.

• One thousand workers lose their lives to falls at work every year, and 500 of them are in construction. Furthermore, 55 of them are from aerial lifts.

• It is important the workers use fall protection correctly – not doing so can result in death.
