Multiple Potain towers working for Manta

Manta Equipment has put a total of eight units of Potain MCT 565 flat top tower cranes to work on two projects in Singapore.

All are 25 tonne capacity versions from the local tower crane rental specialist. Three of them are operating at the site of the Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center (HMGICS) project in the Jurong Innovation District (JID). On the other side of Singapore the other five units are helping construct the Sengkang West Bus Depot near Seletar.

Hyundai Engineering is the main contractor on HMGICS. It will be a 44,000 square metre, seven-storey “innovation lab” in a building with a footprint of 28,000 square metres. This project’s MCT 565 trio were erected to their 50 metre working height within two days of arrival, Manitowoc said.

Their jibs are set at 60 and 65 metres, giving capacities of 7.4 and 8.7 tonnes, respectively. Maximum possible jib length on this model is 80 metres.

Five at work

On the other project, the Sengkang West Bus Depot, the main contractors are Santarli Construction and Zheng Keng Engineering & Construction. They are working in a joint venture on the new S$200 million (US$148 million) transport hub.

All five of the cranes were erected early in the year. All are operating at a working height of 60 metres. Four of them have 55 metre jibs and the other 50 metres with capacities of 10 and 12 tonnes, respectively.

Sengkang West Bus Depot will be Singapore’s third multi-storey bus station. Around 600 buses can be accommodated. Completion is scheduled for 2024.

Benjamin Goh, sales and marketing manager at Manta Equipment, commented on the contractors’ choice of crane, “Hyundai Engineering have long had trust and confidence in Potain cranes, so they were delighted with the proposal for three new Potain MCT 565 cranes for their project.

“They are only prepared to rely on the best possible equipment for such a spectacular project. Likewise, the main contractor on the Sengkang West Bus Depot project is a longtime Potain customer and appreciates the cranes’ reliability. This is an LTA (Land Transport Authority) project so there are strict protocols to follow but, because the cranes are new, the contractor avoided the need to get approval for their use.”

Increasing application

Marco Zucchet, Manitowoc sales director, said of the MCT 565, “We now have units working across Asia and the rest of the world and it is fantastic to see these eight units helping to build two high profile developments in Singapore.”

The MCT 565 is built at the Manitowoc factory in Zhangjiagang, China. In addition to 25 tonnes, versions are available with 20 and 32 tonne capacity.

The folding cab on the slewing unit and folding counter jib are two features helping to be able to ship the crane’s entire upper section in nine containers. Manitowoc claims that is four fewer than competing tower cranes of a similar size.

Three counter jib options (17, 21 and 24 metres) can be matched to the chosen jib length, to help transportation and erection. It also optimises the crane’s overall footprint on tight job sites, the manufacturer said.
